What makes a Design Studio Green?

It takes years and years of living and learning a better way to design, specify, and run your business. Some of the lessons learned are close to home and right in the Design Studio. Designlines has incorporated and welcomed many changes in how we maintain and run our Studio. Recycling has always been important but now we have recycle bins to collect light bulbs, batteries, and paper, plastic and cardboard. We went from 1 recycle dumpster to 2. Fluorescent fixtures replaced hot incandescent fixtures which save on electricity as well as heat gain. All exterior lights were put on timers to maximize efficiency and air filters are changed monthly. Hoping to save money on expensive water bottle service we installed a water filter with a chiller to cut down on plastic bottles and the monthly expense. Samples are either donated to local schools or recycled. Clients are encouraged to donate their lightly used light fixtures or appliances or home furnishings to the HabiStore that benefits Habitat for Humanity. Our library has increased from just a few Vendors with Green Product to most every Vendor offering a choice for our clients and projects. We have introduced our "R" words to help influence - Reuse, Recycle, Reinvent, Resale, Reupholster, Refinish, Redo. Our goal is to become LEED certified in the very near future.
